Some days you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed.
Nothing in particular has happened, but you're just not feeling your best. You know those mornings when your child wakes up already in a mood, and they've decided that today just isn't their day? It can feel impossible to know how to help.
The truth is, it's completely normal. Maybe they didn't sleep well, had a bad dream, or they're still upset about something from the day before. Sometimes all it takes is one little thing for a wall to go up.
And honestly... we're exactly the same as adults.
Recently I was babysitting my little cousin, and when I arrived she was in a terrible mood. My first thought was, "Oh no... how am I going to turn this around?"
Then something clicked.
Why don't I just show her what I do when I wake up feeling a bit off?
I have five little morning steps that help me reset my mindset. They're nothing groundbreaking, but sometimes a few simple actions are all it takes to feel excited about the day ahead. Even at 18, I still do these most mornings. Some of them can feel a little forced or even a bit cringey at first, but I genuinely believe they work.
Even if you're staying home, getting out of your pyjamas and putting on a nice outfit makes such a difference. Getting dressed signals to your brain that it's time to start the day, helping boost motivation, confidence and productivity.
Brush it, tie it up, or try a fun new hairstyle. It's such a small thing, but it can instantly make you feel a little more put together. Sometimes all it takes is looking in the mirror and thinking, "Ooo, I love my hair today!"
This is the big one.
Look yourself in the mirror and say a few kind things to yourself. It might feel awkward at first (trust me, I know!), but it's one of the best ways to build self-confidence and slowly replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
Eat a breakfast you genuinely enjoy that's full of nourishing, delicious food. After a whole night without eating, your body needs energy to get going. A good breakfast can make a huge difference to your mood, focus and energy levels.
Put on your favourite song and have a little dance around the kitchen. It sounds simple, but music has a way of lifting your mood almost instantly. If your favourite song is playing... how could you not dance?
I tried these five little steps with my cousin, and it honestly amazed me.
She went from sitting there upset and grumpy to singing and dancing while she ate her breakfast. We completely turned the morning around.
After seeing how much they helped, I made her a little poster to hang in her room. Now, whenever she wakes up feeling a bit flat—or even when she's already having a good day but wants to make it even better—she has these five simple reminders waiting for her.
It made me think... why not share it with everyone?
You can do these steps with your kids, or even join in yourself. No matter how old you are, these little habits can give your morning that extra boost.
I've attached the poster below as a free downloadable PDF, so you can print it out and pop it somewhere you'll see it. Simply copy the link below and paste it in yoru browzer. Hopefully, the next time someone in your house wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, these five little steps help turn the day around.
Happy mornings,
xx Mia
